In a World without Walls and Fences who needs Windows and Gates?
THE LINUX OPERATING SYSTEMS
Linux has come a very long way from the old command line prompts that were once used. The modern Linux alternatives are as different to their predecessors as DOS is to Windows XP Professional.
Now we have a real alternative to the Microsoft Windows Environment and it is called Linux and like Microsoft's Windows it is a Graphic User Interface and it works just like Windows only better. It has all the main programs built into the system so you do not have to go out and buy expensive software to go along with your Operating System. When you install any modern version of Linux you not only get the Operating System but also a multitude of built in programs ranging from Word processors to Video editing and CD recording. You get all the common office applications as well as all the software you can think of. There is very little left out.
We can supply and support several versions of Linux like Fedora, Debian, Mandriva and Novell.
We can also obtain specialized versions of Linux as required like Yellow Dog, Blue Linux, Solaris 9 and Xandros or any other Linux system that you may require.
All these Versions of Linux are covered by the GPL user agreement which effectively means they are free to download and use although some companies can provide Service Agreements if required.

However if you require a more robust and stable Operating System then you cannot go past DEBIAN as it only uses well proven source code and while it lacks some of the refinements {it does not have all the bells and whistles that some of the others have} of the other Linux Systems it is very stable. At the expense of being at the cutting edge of technology. DEBIAN is a well respected distribution with an excellent reputation. DEBIAN only includes software that has positively, absolutely proved itself to be stable. DEBIAN also adheres strictly to the open source philosophy, {that is "Free as in speech, not as in beer"}
DEBIAN is unique among the distributors covered here in that there is no single company behind it, and no boxed set you can buy off the shelf. Rather DEBIAN is developed and maintained by almost a thousand volunteers worldwide working towards the aim of producing a reliable, consistent, and totally free Operating System. It's no surprise that DEBIAN has a large and loyal user base, and its strong focus on stability has endeared it towards many projects.

"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support.
The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.
These freedoms make Ubuntu fundamentally different from traditional proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.
The team behind Ubuntu makes the following public commitment to its users:
Ubuntu will always be free of charge, and there is no extra fee for the "enterprise edition." We make our very best work available to everyone on the same Free terms.
Ubuntu includes the very best in translations and accessibility infrastructure that the Free Software community has to offer, to make Ubuntu usable by as many people as possible.
Ubuntu is released regularly and predictably; a new release is made every six months. You can use the current stable release or the current development release. Each release is supported with security updates for at least 18 months.
Ubuntu is entirely committed to the principles of free and open source software development; we encourage people to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.
Ubuntu is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports Intel x86 (IBM-compatible PC), AMD64 (Hammer) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.
Ubuntu includes more than 16,000 pieces of software, but the core installation fits on a single CD. Ubuntu starts with the Linux kernel version 2.6 and Gnome 2.10, and covers every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to internet access applications, web server software, email software, programming languages and tools and of course several games.

Mandriva previously known as Mandrake and Lycoris has now emerged from the European Linux Companies and is again at the head of its game and is one of the Leading European Linux Companies. Red Hat has now developed its own In House Business system which is called Red Hat and also has available an Open Source Product called Fedora. For the benefit of this site we will only discuss the Fedora product which is the Free to Download and install. It is more a development platform for its Big Brother Red Hat which is the corporate version and heavily sold by the big Server makers.
Fedora Takes up where Red Hat was prior to it moving into the fully corporate world and offers the ease of the RPM installer as well as the already proven track record that Red Hat previously held. It is truly a fully fledged development system that is capable of not only being used on the Desktop but on servers from the small scale to the very biggest ones currently available.

SUSE is now under Novell Control and is the basis for Novell's push into the Linux World. It retains all of the previous useful aspects of SUSE as well as the name but is now solely a Novell product and with the additional support.

OpenOffice is the office program that comes with most Linux Kernels and is to Linux what Microsoft Office is to Windows only more so as it has more applications included as well as a word processor, spreadsheet, data base, Power Point, Publisher. It also contains a host of graphic programs as well as CD Burning applications and a version is available for Windows so if you would like to try out the Linux Office Programs you can without leaving the comfort of your Windows Platform.

Win4Lin is a new product that allows you to run Windows Programs on a Linux Platform. At the moment it is only recommended for Office type programs but with time this will eventually spill over to other applications and maybe even have the ability to run Window's games given enough time and the inclination on the part of the makers to incorporate this into the program. This is not a program covered by the GPL and if you want it you have to buy it or it comes with a retail copy of Mandrake Linux 9.1.
